(In reading my prior EOL posts, I realize I should have said “Enough Edgy” or something like that to be appropriately alliterative.)
Gutsy is now officially at end-of-life.
Looking back through my build logs, I can see that my desktop spent 25 hours, 6 minutes, and 47 seconds building 208 security updates. (And 18 hours, 23 minutes, 45 seconds doing 335 builds during the Gutsy devel window.) As before, these times obviously don’t include patch hunting/development, failed builds, testing, stuff done on my laptop or the porting machines, etc.
Current combined devel/security build standings per release:
dapper: 51:27:29
hardy: 171:21:40
intrepid: 84:23:19
jaunty: 18:43:09
Thank you Gutsy! You were much nicer than Feisty, especially for wifi on my poor laptop.

I do wonder why Gutsys support period was not chosen to overlap with the Jaunty release date. I still have one machine running Gutsy, and now have the choice between running for some weeks without security upgrades (until Jaunty is stable enough), or switching to Intrepid which itself will be EOL in a year already, or switching to Hardy which has longer support but doesn’t really offer much over Gutsy feature-wise or bugfixing-wise. None of these choices seem particularly tempting, and so I’m really wondering why there wasn’t created an “inviting” way to switch to Jaunty some weeks after its release…

Since one can’t upgrade from Gutsy to Jaunty, it doesn’t matter much practically. If a person isn’t using LTS releases, generally they upgrade Ubuntu every 6 months. For your situation, I’d recommend upgrading to Hardy, then Intrepid, then Jaunty, one upgrade a week. :)

Heh – I’ll probably install Jaunty in a new partition and just copy the user files, and then edit Grub config when the new system is completely configured.

Do you by any chance know when the Gutsy repos will be removed from the mirrors? I have a couple of server to upgrade still and since it’s so much harder when Gutsy is gone from the mirrors, I thought I’d ask, I have not been able to find that info anywhere..

Gutsy will be moved to old-releases.ubuntu.com at any time. There is no specific schedule, but if you still need to upgrade, I would recommend doing ASAP if for no other reason than there will be no security support any more.
